THE ORGANIZATION

The YMCA of the East Bay is one of the largest YMCAs in the nation serving over 90,000 children, teens, and adults in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Since joining forces with the YMCA of the Central Bay Area in 2017, the YMCA of the East Bay’s staff, board, and volunteers have created a culture deeply rooted in three key mission priorities: early childhood impact, youth development, and healthy communities.

Central to the Y’s mission is a commitment to “building more than muscle.” To help reduce the increasing incidence of chronic disease and the rising health care costs that Bay Area families continually face, the Y has worked actively to provide access to high-quality health and fitness resources. This work is vital for building healthy individuals, families, and communities. Through personalized programs, exercise classes, fitness coaching, and much more, the Y’s five branches (Berkeley, Albany, Oakland, Pleasant Hill, and Richmond Parkway) play an increasingly critical role in
advancing the health of East Bay communities. Membership is a top priority in the Association.

The work of the YMCA also extends beyond the walls of its fitness centers and reaches deep into East Bay communities, many of which are economically disadvantaged, and trauma impacted. At its 25+ Early Learning Centers, the Y’s staff work tirelessly to close the opportunity gap by providing children with the head start they need to succeed in school and in life. Through its youth development/after school programs, the Y provides tutoring, counseling, and crucial support to students on 30 school campuses throughout the East Bay. These dedicated efforts are creating healthier school climates and helping to close the achievement gap by enabling East Bay youth to see and reach their full potential.

The YMCA of the East Bay’s vibrant and diverse community includes people of all ages, from every walk of life, working side by side to strengthen communities. With a local presence and national reach, its mission will continue to be one of Advancing Health, Empowering Youth, and Strengthening Communities.

YMCA – Albany Branch

The Albany YMCA is an important part of the YMCA of the East Bay. The 7,000 sq foot facility, located in downtown Albany, offers an extensive program of classes for everyone from children and families to teens and seniors. While its facilities are smaller than those of other regional YMCAs, it has a committed volunteer and membership base and enormous potential to grow its program offerings and increase membership. The Albany Y includes a popular full fitness center and a variety of classes, including mat Pilates, yoga and strength training, all part of the facility’s efforts to meet the community’s health and wellness needs. Albany’s smaller size is its strength because it is a place where community members, including many seniors looking for connection, can interact with fitness and membership staff who counsel and support then, encouraging them to participate in coaching sessions and other programs to enhance their fitness and workout experience. Albany’s dedicated cadre of volunteers and community members have enabled the branch to have one of the most successful annual fundraising campaigns of any the East Bay Ys.

THE POSITION

The YMCA of the East Bay is seeking an Executive Director to oversee its Albany YMCA. Serving over 1700 households, the Albany branch has helped pioneer many of the Association’s health initiatives including functional fitness and weight-loss interventions. The ED position reports to the Executive Director/Vice President and will be responsible for managing all branch operations, including strategy development and planning; leading and managing staff and volunteers; and overseeing the branch’s annual fall campaign.

The ED will build strong, strategic relationships with current and prospective partners throughout the Association and externally. As the branch looks to grow and expand its membership base, building bridges within the community to ensure all segments of society have access to the Y will be important. The ED will also play a key role in the Association’s philanthropic success, leading the branch’s annual campaign in close collaboration with and support from the Y’s central development department. They will also be charged with building and supporting an engaged board of advisors, capable of supporting the branch’s programs, community outreach and fundraising programs. The ED will oversee a full- and part- time team of twenty-four, guiding staff on how to strengthen knowledge, skills, and competencies that improve organizational performance. Creating an environment of trust and respect by empowering
others and sharing authority will be key to the ED’s success.

The ED will have a strong understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially as it relates to program development and outreach to underserved populations.
