ReSurge International
Chief Development Officer
THE ORGANIZATION

ReSurge International transforms the lives of people in developing countries by providing access to life-changing reconstructive surgical care that is safe, timely and affordable. Each year, ReSurge renews the health of approximately 3000 patients in Africa, Asia and Latin America so they can go to school, provide for their families, and contribute to society. Many of these patients are children who live with disabilities resulting from congenital conditions, disease or injuries. Over 95 million children worldwide live with such disabilities; fewer than 10% of whom attend school.
Resurge’s Visiting Educator program involves surgeons from leading US and international universities such as Stanford, Harvard and Johns Hopkins. The program provides critical training to the next generation of reconstructive surgeons abroad, working with them to create a sustainable business model and to provide high-quality reconstructive surgeries to those living in poverty and remote regions of the world. As a result of ReSurge’s training, more than 85 percent of the surgeries ReSurge supports are conducted by those local surgery teams.
With Stanford University roots and a long history of meeting the reconstructive surgery needs of thousands of patients worldwide, ReSurge anticipates strategic growth over the next five years to meet the increasing need for its services.

THE POSITION

Reporting to the President and CEO, the Chief Development Officer (CDO) will design and implement a comprehensive fundraising program to support ReSurge’s strategic, long-term vision. The CDO will be responsible for all channels of fundraising, including annual, major and planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, development operations/stewardship and events.
In 2018, ReSurge acquired the program and assets of Burn Rescue, a nonprofit that was closing its doors and that had been a grantor to ReSurge for its work in burn surgery in developing countries. As a result of the acquisition, ReSurge is now engaging and stewarding Burn Rescue donors and managing its fundraising operations and campaigns. The CDO will be responsible for continuing and growing both ReSurge International and Burn Rescue’s constituencies and private support.
The CDO will manage an annual fund manager as well as a part-time development assistant. S/he will also oversee the work of several development consultants including:

-
An event planner (.5 FTE)
-
A proposal writer (.25 FTE)
-
A database manager (.25 FTE)
ReSurge’s work is currently funded through private donations from individuals, foundations and corporations, as well as through gifts-in-kind. In FY20 ReSurge raised $3.1 in private support. While the US government’s priorities do not currently include funding for reconstructive surgery, that policy may change in the future as the global surgery movement raises the visibility of the need and opportunity. If that happens, the CDO may also be involved in efforts to secure support from government funders.
ReSurge is international in program scope and donor and volunteer constituencies. The CDO will be required to travel nationally and occasionally internationally. As of March 2020, ReSurge is postponing international travel and discouraging national travel due to COVID-19.
