THE ORGANIZATION

 

Overview

 

Jewish Family and Children’s Services of San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, Santa Clara, and San Mateo counties is one of the oldest and largest family services institutions in the United States. JFCS was founded in 1850 by immigrant pioneers who arrived in California during the Gold Rush and created an extended family to care for each other. Today, JFCS continues that extended family, serving over 80,000 people annually with the highest quality, research-based social services designed to strengthen individuals, strengthen families, and strengthen community.

 

Programs

 

JFCS is a lifeline for children, families, and older adults who are facing life transitions as well as personal crises or challenges. JFCS has over 40 programs, including dementia care for seniors, therapy for children, youth volunteer programs, and services for people with disabilities. It supports the well-being and strength of the entire community—both Jewish and non-Jewish—so that all have the opportunity to reach their full potential. JFCS’s services range from infant adoption and new baby parenting classes through senior home care and palliative care services—recognizing that at some point in life, everyone needs support to weather life's transitions and challenges. JFCS serves clients of all ages, races and sexual orientations.  

 

 

THE POSITION

​

The Director of Institutional Giving is a key member of the development team. Reporting to the Director of Development, the Director is responsible for working in collaboration with JFCS leadership and program colleagues to develop and implement fundraising strategies to secure support from corporate, foundation and government sponsors. S/he will provide leadership in strategic planning, proposal development and the identification of new funding sources. The Director supports the comprehensive development efforts of JFCS, including annual, capital and endowment campaigns, working closely with JFCS leadership and program staff in proposal development and reporting.

 

Responsibilities:

​

  • Identify, qualify, and solicit corporations, foundations, and government agencies in support of JFCS programs and priorities

  • Actively conduct prospect research to identify viable funding opportunities for JFCS priorities. Grow and develop the organization’s institutional prospect pool 

  • Perform internal reviews of institutional needs and assess feasibility of obtaining external funding for JFCS projects and programs

  • Write, edit, and submit letters of inquiry, proposals and reports for independent foundations, corporations, government agencies, and select individuals/family foundations

  • Track proposal submissions and progress. Maintain proactive relationships with JFCS departments to ensure process efficiency and award/grant compliance

  • Provide counsel and support to JFCS colleagues in the planning, writing, program design, budget development and evaluation of grants/proposals

  • Leverage board and staff relationships to maximize development opportunities

  • Serve as liaison to institutional funders throughout the region, developing collaborative relationships with grant makers and their representatives and involving the leadership and staff of JFCS as appropriate in outreach, cultivation, and solicitation activities

  • Prepare an annual portfolio plan in consultation with the Director of Development to review top institutional prospect strategies

  • Supervise the development and management of record-keeping systems in Raiser’s Edge related to the institutional fundraising program

  • Develop and manage a stewardship program for institutional funders 

  • Prepare and maintain a calendar and schedule of operations for proposal submissions and grant applications

 

 

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

 

Experience:

 

  • A minimum of three years of demonstrable experience and success in raising support from institutional funders

  • Experience identifying giving opportunities and thinking creatively to establish matches between programs and funding priorities and potential donors

  • Experience researching and successfully identifying funding sources using a variety of individual and reference sources

  • Experience designing strategic approaches to funders using organizational and volunteer leadership as appropriate

  • Experience with MS Office Suite; Raiser’s Edge experience preferred

  • Experience writing successful grant proposals and preparing multi-year budgets for institutional funders

  • An understanding of and experience in institutional gift management, reporting and stewardship

  • Successful experience working with corporate and foundation executives, program staff and boards
     

​Education:

​

A Bachelor’s degree is required. An advanced degree is desirable.

  • Ability to grasp and articulate programs in a way that meets the interests and passions of funders

  • Knowledge of Bay Area institutional funders preferred

  • Commitment to the agency’s mission, goals, and objectives

  • Thorough understanding of budgets and the budget preparation process

  • Ability to provide accurate and timely reports as required by corporate, foundation and government donors

  • Ability to work independently in developing and managing a corporate and foundation portfolio of prospects/donors
